I get asked these questions every single day, without fail:
1) "Hey Catie! How did you get so cool?"
2) "How did you get into writing?"
Finally, I've written my incredible story in hopes to inspire others to get into writing.
It all started when I was eight and my entire family decided to take a Christmas vacation in France. As fate would have it, every member of my family overslept the morning of our flight, including me. And in an all-out mad dash to make the flight on time... they forgot about me!
I guess that's what I get for opting to sleep in the attic to avoid sharing a bed with my bed-wetter cousin, but whatever. Back to the story.
This was the first great creative challenge of my life – fending for myself in this cold, cruel world.
Carelessly abandoned, I was officially the woman of the house and had to grow up quick. I started shaving, buying groceries, doing laundry and even taught myself how to shoot a gun. I also made friends with the creepy old man in the neighborhood who carried around a shovel salting the streets. Once I got to know him, he was actually very sweet and just misunderstood. Everything seemed perfect like the ending of a John Hughes movie until the evil realities of suburbia hit me in the face like a paint can.
Unbeknownst to me, there were a string of burglaries happening in our neighborhood. And guess what? The burglars were casing MY house for their big score!
Just like every other creative challenge I’ve faced in my short life, I womanned up and got thinking. Then suddenly, without warning, it came. The best idea ever – craft a slew of rudimentary, yet highly conceptual booby-traps built from scratch and strategically place them in and around the house.
Long story short, thanks to my fearlessness, ingenuity and an old man packing a shovel (boy, am I glad I befriended that guy), I thwarted the bandits, protected my home and pretty much saved Christmas. From then on, I knew ideas were my thing.
This epiphany was later reaffirmed when I found myself lost in New York. But that’s a whole other story.
